Summertime by Virouet Summertime by Virouet
This is my entry for the Pandect Summertime contest, featuring the characters Noah and Edgar from the comic Pandect made by :iconmorbidprince:. You can read the rough draft here Pandect draft

For the contest we picked our favourite cover of the song 'Summertime' and made something inspired by it, I chose Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's version,  the medium was entirely up to us. I picked drawing as it is my strong suit out of the options I could think of but decided to colour it digitally (after botching the first attempt with copics), as it is something I rarely try and feel very unconfident about my skills in. I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to challenge myself to practice a medium I didn't know that well, and I hope you like it.

.........................................
The characters are not mine and I take no credit for their creation, they belong to Dina Situ.
The art is mine, and I do not give permission to use or repost it elsewhere.

I'll post it later on my tumblr Viro's Whimsies , it's mainly sketches at the moment. I'm always happy to make new friends on tumblr if you feel like following me :)

The one on the overal is a denim texture I found here on dA, the ones on the shirt and pants are some paper textures I had from years ago :)

Very nice!  I have never used textures, but then again, I never touch my photoshop...I only use a cheap free program for coloring because that is what I am comfortable with!  At some point in time I will get brave and move on. :)  Awesome ones though, I like how you used them, subtle.  :)

I've found that they're a good way to avoid making the art look flat and lifeless. There are many good textures to find here and on google, and making your own watercolour textures is easy too. There's many fun things you can experiment and try out with watercolour and gouache :)

I've been wanting to try out FireAlpaca as an alternative to Photoshop and Sai (I've heard it's supposed to be a decent mix of both).

FireAlpaca is wonderful in that is very simple and easy to use (plus being free is nice).  I love using it, but it might also be because I am scared of photoshop.

I would love to try SAI, despite it being much more complicated than Alpaca.

I would hope to one day get to the place where you are so I can start experimenting with textures! :D

I have a mac so I haven't had the opportunity to try Sai, but I've heard it's very intuitive and mimics realistic painting mediums well so I'd love to be able to try it soon. (I've also heard it's quicker to learn and get comfortable with than Photoshop so it would be nice to be able to compare the two experiences).

And don't be afraid to try out textures! Cut, paste, erase the parts you don't want and play around with the layer settings and filters. ;) Best of luck!!

It is interesting, I know some artists use PS for inking and SAI for color...I would love to try SAI since I have heard that same thing you have.  Heck, I am an adult, I don't know why I don't just go and buy it! XD

So with textures, do you just cut/shape them fit them into the space you want?  ie. the leg of a character?

Yep. (though since I usually add the textures after I'm done with the colours I just merge the colour layers that's in the area I want the texture to be, click select-inverse on the colour layer and delete on the texture layer. No shaping needed. :) )
There's a lot of nice textures that are good to use on an entire canvas, to set the mood or make the colours more uniform/fit together, but it's also a good way to give texture to clothes, plants, trees etc.

I don't know why you're not confident of your digital coloring skills, it turned out really wonderful! I would love to be anywhere near the talented myself, definitely something I need to work on.

Such a sweet, cute picture. Really feels like summer to me!

I've only tried colouring digital about four times I think, and I spend several days finishing XD
I just think there's got to be an easier way to get the colours in my head to translate onto the screen the way I'd like them to, haha!
